Essex (Bark) logbook, 1796.

The logbook of the bark Essex details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Java, Jan.-July 1796. The bark's home port was Salem; the owner was William Orne; the master was John Ropes. The logbook includes notes on shipboard occupations and wounds and injuries incurred by at least one merchant mariner on board. During its voyage, the Essex spoke the ship Hero (out of Boston) and the brig Pilgrim (out of Beverly, Mass.).
